PROVENANCE

This piece was created and hand-dyed in western India. The berry hue is the result of a sophisticated triple-dye process of rich crimson hues extracted from madder root, an ancient source of vegetable dye long-coveted by Asian and Egyptian monarchs, lac, a scarlet resin harvested from indigenous Indian trees and plants, and harda, the fruit of the tropical almond tree also known for its ayurvedic medicinal uses. Artisans achieved the ombre shades of this piece by deftly tying the linen and varying the dye concentration and number of dips.
