Nineteenth-century Central Asian artisans created woven ikat silks, now an iconic textile print. Ikat weaving originates from Uzbekistan. In this technique, sections of yarn are dyed before the cloth is woven, creating beautiful patterns. Ikat was traditionally used to make robes, as you see here, or alternatively used as wall hangings. Uzbek ikats have historically served as symbols of status, wealth, power, and prestige.
