Shisha embroidery was introduced to India from Iran during the Mughal Empire. Shisha, a Hindi word derived from the Persian shisheh, means "little glass," and refers to the incorporation of small decorative mirrors into the textile. Among Hindus in the north, west, and central states of India, Shisha embroidery is thought to have a protective quality and is tied to the front door of homes to ward off evil. Shisha embroidery is also displayed around the home as art, and created into garments, such as belts, for festivities and celebrations.
