This ceremonial candle showcases a multi-generational traditional craft from Teotitlan, Oaxaca. These intricately designed candles are gifted in the pre-marriage ritual of la contentada, the moment in which a marriage proposal has been accepted. The maestra handcrafts each candle from beeswax, using only natural dyes, heirloom clay molds passed down from her grandmother, and improvised tools from objects at hand. Candles are adorned with symbols representing birth, life and death; the flowers on this piece bestow light and luck to the married couple.
